From Then... |
In the Spring of 1972 gay marriage was a big story, receiving wide coverage in The Advocate. It reported that Canada had what may be its first homosexual marriage, on February 26th, between singer and radio-television personality Michel Girouard, 27, and his accompanist, 25-year old Regeant Tremblay. That story was also Advocate front page news in March, and a few weeks later they got even more coverage, when they flew to Los Angeles to have their marriage solemnized by MCC's Reverend Troy Perry. This time The Advocate ran a several page interview, with lots of photos. Click to see those articles. And why I'm working all this into a page on gay marriage music is that later in 1972, Girouard and Tremblay released an album making it all musically official. Released on a Canadian branch of the London label, it was titled "Le Couple," and featured cabaret type styling of songs (sung in French) written by Gilbert Becaud, Jacques Brel, Edith Piaf, among others. |
Flash
forward to 2004, and the issue of gay weddings and gay marriage is major
news and, unfortunately, a political wedge used in Bush's election. But
musically it's going strong, especially with the release of a double-CD
set called "Marry Me." Released by Figjam Records, part of the
proceeds will go to the ACLU's Lesbian & Gay Rights and AIDS Projects.
The lineup is stellar, at least in my estimation, as it features the best of our independent artists, and I believe it to be one of the best various artist compilations released in years. It would be difficult to single out artists, but my personal biases are going to allow it anyway, as I love that the set includes, in no particular order, Mark Weigle, The BootLICKERS, Ari Gold, Veronica Klaus, Yolanda, Daniel Cartier, Peter Donnelly, Bill Budd, Robin Renee...okay, gotta stop, just buy the CD...:) |
...To Now |
The artists and songs tabled below, represent most of the songs I could find that lyrically deal with the subject of gay marriage, and sometimes the interpretation is looser than others. Obviously the choices are often subjective. Some songs are very political, some funny, and some romantic. I'll be adding more as I acquire them, and if you can recommend some, please let me know. Click on the musical note next to each title to download the complete songs, or in some cases, a song clip. Lyrics for some of the songs appear on another page. also,

A Benefit for Freedom to Marry (www.centaurmusic.com, 2006) The closest to a "wedding" song on this concert CD is Alan Cumming's version of "Married," but that wasn't the point of this release....its purpose was to raise funds for freedomtomarry.org, and the 2004 concert featured Lou Reed, Lady Bunny, Le Tigre, Margaret Cho, Bob Mould, Sandra Berhhard, Ben Jelen, Moby, Sleater-Kinney and John Cameron Mitchell. |
